A parliamentary committee is contemplating summoning Ranveer Allahbadia, widely known as Beer Biceps, to provide insights regarding a recent controversy. A complaint has been lodged against him and fellow comedian Samay Raina, among others, for allegedly producing ‘obscene’ content during Raina’s show, India’s Got Latent, as reported by the Maharashtra cyber police.
2 FIRs filled against ‘Beer Biceps’ Ranveer Allahbadia
An Indian Express report has noted that this marks the second FIR against them, following a case initiated by the Assam police earlier this week. In light of the allegations, the parliamentary panel is considering calling Allahbadia to discuss the matter. During his appearance on India’s Got Latent, a satirical take on India’s Got Talent, he made a vulgar joke, asking a contestant whether they would prefer to watch their parents engage in sexual activity daily for the rest of their lives or to join in once to stop it forever.
The cyber police have charged those involved under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act. It pertains to the transmission of obscene material in electronic form, among other provisions. A senior officer from the Maharashtra cyber police revealed, “On Monday evening, we registered a case against 30 individuals, including performers, hosts, judges, and contestants from all six episodes of India’s Got Latent. We will be issuing summons to all of them to participate in the police investigation.” This action follows an announcement from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on social media, stating that Allahbadia and others had been booked in his state.
Ranveer’s apology
In response, Allahbadia issued an apology via a video on his Instagram account, admitting, “My comment wasn’t just inappropriate; it wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte. And I’m here to say sorry.” He noted that many questioned his use of the platform, affirming, “No, this is not how I will use it. I’m not seeking to justify my actions; I am solely here to apologize. I experienced a lapse in judgment, and it was not cool on my part.”
He emphasized the responsibility he holds, given that his podcast is viewed by people of all ages. “Family is the last thing I will disrespect. I need to use this platform more thoughtfully. That has been my takeaway from this incident. I’ve requested the creators to cut out the insensitive parts from the video. I apologize and hope for your forgiveness as a fellow human.”
Ranveer’s apology reactions
Reactions to his apology have been mixed; while some supporters showed understanding, numerous critics dismissed it as mere damage control. Allahbadia, with an impressive following of 3.4 million on his personal Instagram, 4.4 million on his Beer Biceps page, and an additional 8.23 million on YouTube, has a varied portfolio that includes interviews with notable figures such as Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, former RAW chief Vikram Sood, and celebrities like Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor. Some of his videos have also gained significant traction in Pakistan, particularly those featuring interviews with foreign travellers about their experiences in the country.
